You can add mail.domain.com as an alias domain for domain.com.
Just be sure that the original recipient username (e.g. the "recipient" portion of recipient@mail.domain.com) exists as a mailbox, alias or distribution list on the domain.com domain. IOW, recipient@domain.com needs to be an address where mail can be sent.
